Set on a beautiful 117-acre campus minutes from downtown Covington, Louisiana, Christwood is dedicated to making life better for older adults in every way. As a Life Plan Community, we offer concierge independent living, resort-style amenities, convenient services, and access to a full continuum of on-site health services to more than 250 residents. In fact, we’re the only not-for-profit Life Plan Community on the Northshore. A history of forward thinking.
In the early 1980s, Father Steve Holzhab, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, saw the need for a senior living community for members of the congregation. Some had no family living nearby who could take them into their homes. Others had no choice but to move to New Orleans or other cities where there were more options for senior living.
Father Steve envisioned a place where church members and other older adults could continue their active lives in Covington. He recruited vestry member Jack Lohman and a few others who embraced the idea. Together, they visited retirement communities in other states and came up with a plan that was unique in the region.
In May 1996, Christwood opened its doors as the first continuing care retirement community in the Covington area for adults age 60+. As demand grew, Christwood added independent living cottages and Atrium apartments, broadened health services to include rehabilitative care and memory care, and introduced Vieux Care, an on-site direct primary care medical practice.
Opportunities for older adults to lead an active, independent lifestyle expanded further in 2013 with the opening of the Community Center at Christwood. Open to residents and members of the public age 55+, this 23,000-square-foot fitness and wellness center includes a heated indoor pool, fitness center, indoor pickleball courts, interactive game groom, Forever Fit Kitchen, Lotus Spa, Bloom gift shop, plus a full calendar of social events.
Today, we remain as committed as ever to enhancing quality of life for Christwood residents and we continue to expand our mission to provide needed services to the greater Northshore community.

Christwood will also foster, sponsor, organize, develop, and participate in other activities of a charitable, educational, or scientific nature compatible with its mission.
